What Is Structural Glazing? The Frameless Facade Explained

What structural glazing actually is
Structural glazing is a method of fixing glass to a building frame with structural silicone sealant instead of visible metal frames or caps. The glass becomes the finished surface of the facade, while the aluminum or steel structure behind it carries the loads. The result is the clean, frameless look seen on showrooms, office towers and villas across Riyadh.
The load path is what separates structural glazing from a normal curtain wall: wind pressure and the weight of the glass transfer through the silicone bond to the supporting frame. Because that bond does real engineering work, both the silicone and the adhesion process are specified and tested, not improvised on site.
How a frameless facade is built
A structural glazing facade is built from three parts: the aluminum support structure (mullions and transoms, usually alloy 6063-T5 or T6), the glass panels, and the structural silicone that bonds them together. Panels are typically 12-19 mm toughened or laminated glass, and for exterior facades they are usually double-glazed units with a low-E coating on the inner face.
The silicone bead is applied to a calculated width and depth, known as the bite, which the engineer sizes for the wind load at that height. The frame is often recessed behind the glass so the front of the building reads as one continuous glass plane. Ventilation openings can be integrated, but they must be detailed so they do not cut through the structural silicone line.
Why it suits the Saudi climate
The Saudi climate is the real test for any facade: extreme solar gain in summer, wind-blown dust, and sharp temperature swings between day and night. Structural glazing handles this when specified correctly. Double glazing with a low-E coating and a 12-16 mm argon-filled cavity keeps the U-value down, and the low-E coating controls solar heat gain so the glass does not turn the building into a greenhouse.
Dust is the detail most people miss. The structural silicone joints and the frame drainage must be detailed so dust and humidity cannot collect inside the cavity, and the glass should stay cleanable from the outside. For south and west elevations in Riyadh, a high-performance low-E coating and, where needed, a laminated inner pane with a solar-control interlayer make the difference between a comfortable interior and a costly one.
What frameless facades cost in Riyadh
Frameless structural glazing costs more than a standard capped curtain wall because of the glass specification, the tested silicone and the precision required in fabrication. As a guide for Riyadh in 2026: around 1,100-1,600 SAR per square meter for single-glazed toughened glass with standard structural silicone, and roughly 1,800-2,800 SAR per square meter for double-glazed units with low-E coating, argon fill and premium silicone.
The price depends heavily on glass make-up and panel size. Large panels need thicker glass, and low-iron glass for a water-white look adds a clear premium. Compare quotes on the full specification, glass thickness and coating, silicone brand and test certificates, and aluminum profile weight, not on the per-meter headline number.
Specifications to put in your order
Write these into your order: aluminum alloy 6063-T5 or T6 with a minimum frame wall thickness suited to the wind zone; structural silicone to an international standard such as ASTM C1184 or EN 13022, applied by certified applicators; glass panels as toughened, laminated or double-glazed units per the facade design; and a written warranty covering both the silicone bond and the glass coating.
Ask for the engineer's calculation of the silicone bite and the frame deflection under wind load. Deflection should stay within the limits the glass supplier allows, usually around 1/200 to 1/250 of the span. Insist on adhesion and compatibility tests between the silicone and the gaskets or spacers it touches; an incompatible sealant fails within years, not decades.
Saudi Building Code and testing requirements
The Saudi Building Code, particularly SBC 601 for energy conservation, sets the envelope performance that facades in the Kingdom must meet. Depending on the climate zone, the code limits the U-value and the solar heat gain coefficient of glazing, which is why low-E double glazing is now standard in Saudi facades rather than an optional upgrade.
Wind load is calculated per location and height, and safety glazing rules require toughened or laminated glass in vulnerable positions. Before delivery, insist on factory and site tests: water tightness, air infiltration and resistance to wind load, per standards such as ASTM E283, E330 and E331. Ask to see the certificates for the exact profile and glass combination you are buying.
