Thermal Break vs Standard Aluminum Profiles in Riyadh

The window frame is the weak point of most facades in Riyadh. Standard aluminum is an excellent conductor of heat: in summer it pulls outdoor heat straight into the conditioned room, and in winter it does the reverse. A thermal break interrupts that path. This article explains what thermally broken aluminum actually is, what it costs in the Saudi market, and when it is worth the premium — the questions our clients in Riyadh ask us every week.

What a thermal break actually is

A thermal break profile is made of two aluminum chambers joined by polyamide strips — narrow insulating bars, usually 14.8 mm, 24 mm or 34 mm wide, reinforced with glass fiber. The strips physically separate the outside face of the frame from the inside face, so heat has to cross a low-conductivity bridge instead of traveling through solid metal. The wider the strip, the longer that path and the lower the frame's U-value.

The effect is measurable. A standard aluminum frame typically has a Uf of 5.5 to 6.0 W/m2K. A thermally broken frame with double glazing and a 24 mm strip drops the frame Uf to roughly 2.0 to 3.0 W/m2K, and the complete window (Uw) to about 2.8 to 3.2 W/m2K against 4.5 to 5.5 for a standard profile window. That difference is the whole story of this article: it is the difference between a frame that fights your air conditioner and one that works with it.

Why it matters in Riyadh

Riyadh's climate is a stress test for windows. Summer temperatures routinely exceed 45 C, solar radiation on west and south elevations is intense, and cooling accounts for the largest share of a building's electricity bill. Every watt of heat that enters through the frame must be removed by the air conditioner — at a cost that repeats for the life of the building. Frame conduction is often the hidden part of that load because it is invisible next to the glass.

This is also why Saudi code matters here. SBC 601, the energy-conservation chapter of the Saudi Building Code, sets maximum U-values and solar heat gain coefficients for windows in each climate zone. In Riyadh's zone, those limits push specifications toward double glazing with low-e coating — and a standard, non-thermally-broken frame can struggle to meet the overall Uw requirement even with good glass, because the metal frame undoes much of the glazing's insulation. Specifying thermally broken aluminum from the start is the practical way to pass the thermal calculation on the first submission.

There is a comfort angle too. A frame that conducts heat creates a hot band around the window and, in winter, condensation on the inner aluminum surface. Thermally broken profiles stay closer to room temperature, which means fewer cold drafts on January nights and no water running down the frame in air-conditioned spaces.

What it costs

Thermally broken profiles cost more than standard ones: the polyamide strips, the second extrusion and the assembly line all add to the price. As a rule of thumb in the Saudi market, a thermal break adds roughly 20 to 35 percent to the frame cost — in Riyadh today, on the order of SAR 80 to 150 per square meter of window before glazing. The complete window with double glazing typically lands around SAR 500 to 750 per square meter installed, against roughly SAR 350 to 500 for a standard-profile window.

The counterweight is the payback. In a Riyadh villa, a west-facing window of standard profiles can be responsible for a measurable share of the summer cooling load. A thermally broken, double-glazed window typically cuts that window's heat gain by 40 to 60 percent. At Saudi electricity tariffs, the savings usually repay the price difference within a few years — and unlike a cheaper frame, the thermal break keeps paying for the entire life of the building.

What to check in the specification

Not every profile sold as 'thermal' performs the same. Ask your supplier for the Uf value of the frame and the Uw value of the assembled window — numbers, not adjectives. Check the polyamide strip width (14.8 mm is entry level; 24 and 34 mm are common for serious insulation), and whether the profile is foamed, with polyurethane injected between the strips, which improves insulation further. Confirm that the strips are inserted in the factory with a crimping press, not assembled with screws on site.

The glass must be specified together with the frame. For Riyadh, the practical combination is double glazing with a low-e coating and an argon fill, with a warm-edge spacer in the sealed unit. Frame and glass are a system: a strong thermal break paired with single clear glass is wasted money, and excellent glass in a standard frame underperforms. Ask also for the project's SBC 601 compliance report — most reputable suppliers in Riyadh provide the U-value calculation as part of their documentation.

Where standard profiles still make sense

Thermally broken aluminum is not the right answer for every square meter of a building. Interior partitions, windows in covered or un-air-conditioned areas, storefronts in shaded arcades and service areas rarely justify the premium, because there is no conditioned space behind them to protect. For those applications, standard profiles with the same powder coating and hardware are a sensible cost-saving choice.

The decision rule we give clients: spend the thermal break where the sun and the air conditioner meet — exterior windows of living spaces, bedrooms, offices and any elevation with significant solar exposure. Save it where the space behind the window is unconditioned. A budget applied to the right windows buys more comfort than the same budget spread thinly over all of them.

Questions to ask before you order

Before ordering thermally broken windows in Riyadh, put these questions in writing: What are the Uf and Uw values of the offered system, and can you show a test certificate? Which strip width is quoted, and is the profile foamed? Is the double glazing low-e with argon, and who manufactures the sealed units? What air and water infiltration ratings does the window meet, and under which standard? And what does the price include — fabrication, hardware, installation, silicone and delivery?

Compare offers on the same specification, not on the same square meter. One supplier may quote a 14.8 mm strip and basic double glazing; another a 24 mm foamed profile with low-e argon glass at a similar price. On paper both are 'thermal break aluminum'. In summer, they are not the same window at all.
