An atrium skylight in Riyadh receives sunlight almost perpendicular to its surface for most of the day. A horizontal glass roof lets in two to three times more solar heat than a vertical window of the same area, which means the glazing you choose decides the size of the air-conditioning plant and the running cost of the building for the next 25 years. In the Saudi climate, a skylight is a heat-control problem before it is a design feature.

Start with the Glass: SHGC and U-Value

Two numbers matter more than any others: SHGC (solar heat gain coefficient) and U-value. For atrium roof glazing in central Saudi Arabia, specify an SHGC of 0.25 or lower and a U-value of 2.2 W/m²K or better. Standard clear double glazing will not reach these figures — you need spectrally selective low-e coatings that let in visible light while reflecting infrared heat.

A practical specification is 6 mm tempered outer pane, a 12–16 mm argon-filled cavity, and a 6 mm laminated inner pane with a low-e coating. The laminated inner pane is not optional: Saudi safety glazing rules require laminated glass overhead so that if the pane breaks, it stays in place instead of falling into the atrium.

Frames That Handle the Desert

Aluminum framing for skylights must be thermally broken — an insulating barrier between the outer and inner profiles. Without it, the frame becomes a direct bridge for heat and condensation forms on the inner edges in winter. Choose powder-coated or PVDF-coated finishes rated for UV exposure; cheap painted frames chalk and fade within a few years in the Saudi sun.

Large atrium roofs expand and contract with the daily temperature swing between desert nights and midday sun. The structure needs engineered expansion joints and a proper slope — at least 2 to 3 percent — so water drains to defined outlets rather than pooling on sealants.

Drainage, Dust and Condensation

Waterproofing an atrium roof in Saudi Arabia is mostly about drainage design, not sealant volume. Specify an internal gutter system with condensation channels beneath the glazing, and a secondary drainage plane under the primary seal. Every joint should be accessible for inspection.

Dust and sand accumulation is a real performance issue: a dirty skylight loses visible light while still letting heat through. Plan for cleaning access from day one — walkable glass systems, catwalks, or a maintenance contract — and consider slightly steeper slopes that let dust wash off during rain.

On cool winter mornings, condensation on aluminum edges is common if the frame has no thermal break or the cavity is not properly sealed. A dehumidified cavity and thermally broken frames prevent most of it.

What the Saudi Building Code Requires

The Saudi Building Code addresses atrium glazing in two places. SBC 601 (energy conservation) sets maximum U-factor and SHGC values for skylights in conditioned buildings — the exact limits depend on the climate zone and the ratio of glazing to roof area, so your contractor should provide calculation sheets showing compliance.

SBC 801 requires safety glazing where glass is overhead or accessible: laminated glass over atriums, and tempered glass where thermal stress is a risk. If the atrium is part of a fire-compartment or smoke-control strategy, the skylight and its framing may need fire-resistance ratings too. Ask for the compliance documentation in writing — a reputable fabricator will provide datasheets, test certificates and a stamped structural calculation.
