A facade louver does two jobs at once: it admits air while blocking sun. In Riyadh, where summer cooling loads dominate and west-facing glass turns offices into ovens by mid-afternoon, that combination is worth real money. Fixed aluminum louvers cut direct solar gain before it reaches the glazing, which means smaller air-conditioning plant, lower monthly bills and more comfortable spaces near the facade. Together they set the free area — the percentage of the opening that actually admits air — usually between 40% and 70%. A deep, closely spaced blade on a west elevation shades the low afternoon sun, while a shallow, open blade on an already shaded elevation prioritizes airflow. Ask for the free-area figure in writing, because it is the number your ventilation engineer will calculate with.

Horizontal blades suit most Saudi facades because the sun tracks high across the south; vertical blades suit east and west exposures where the sun arrives low. When the louver's only job is solar shading, the geometry follows sun angles. When it must also ventilate a plant room, airflow wins and shading is a bonus. Name the primary function before comparing prices.

Operable and Motorized Louvers for Controlled Ventilation

When ventilation demand changes through the day, operable louvers make sense. Manual units suit small openings in workshops and service areas; motorized units with linear actuators suit anything you cannot easily reach. In commercial buildings the actuators are usually wired to the building management system, opening the louvers when CO2 sensors read high or when night-purge cooling is running.

Motorized louvers also do safety duty. Smoke-ventilation louvers on stairwells and atria must open automatically on the fire-alarm signal, and code compliance there is non-negotiable. Specify blade ganging, actuator voltage, the fail-safe position on power loss, and weather seals — and confirm the assembly was tested for airflow and rain penetration rather than assumed to perform.

Materials and Coatings for the Saudi Environment

Extruded aluminum alloy 6063-T5 or T6 is the standard for louvers, and for good reason: it is light, corrosion-resistant and holds tight tolerances. The coating matters more than most buyers realize. Powder coating is the economical default, but on facades exposed to years of UV and dust, a fluoropolymer (PVDF) finish to AAMA 2605 keeps color and gloss far longer. On Gulf-coast projects, marine-grade coatings and stainless steel fixings prevent the white corrosion that ruins cheap installations.

Do not forget dust. Riyadh's dry climate settles fine dust on every horizontal surface, and a louver blade is a horizontal surface by design. A steeper blade angle sheds dust better than a shallow one, and the powder color will either hide or advertise the film between washes. Ask about cleaning access before the design is locked.

Performance: Wind Load, Rain and Noise

Louvers are structural elements, not decorations.
