Facade Louvers: Ventilation and Shading in One System

In Riyadh's climate a facade louver is a working element, not a decorative screen. It admits air while cutting direct sun before it reaches the glass, and that single move lowers cooling load, glare and the size of the air-conditioning plant behind the wall. On west-facing commercial elevations that turn oven-hot by mid-afternoon, external shading is one of the cheapest energy measures a specifier can choose, and the energy chapter of the Saudi Building Code (SBC 601) pushes designers toward exactly this approach. This guide covers what to specify, what aluminum louvers cost and how they perform in Saudi Arabia's heat, dust and wind.

Three numbers define a fixed louver: blade depth, blade spacing and blade angle. Depth commonly runs from 100 mm to 300 mm; spacing controls how much air passes between blades; angle controls how much sun is blocked. Together they set the free area — the share of the opening that actually admits air — usually 40% to 70%. Ask for the free-area figure in writing, because it is the number your ventilation engineer will calculate with.

A deep, closely spaced blade on a west elevation shades the low afternoon sun; a shallow, open blade on an already shaded elevation prioritises airflow. Name the primary function — shading, ventilation or both — before comparing prices, because the geometry follows the function and the price follows the geometry.

Horizontal blades suit most Saudi facades because the sun tracks high across the south; vertical blades suit east and west exposures where the sun arrives low along the glass. Getting the orientation wrong can leave a louver bank shading the wrong part of the day, so check sun paths for the specific elevation rather than copying a detail from another project.

On mixed elevations, two-directional or adjustable-angle blades split the difference, though they cost more and add cleaning surface. For plant rooms and intake screens the priority flips to airflow: a light, open blade beats a deep shading blade every time.

When ventilation demand changes through the day, operable louvers make sense. Manual units suit small openings in workshops and service areas; motorized units with linear actuators suit anything you cannot easily reach. In commercial buildings the actuators are usually wired to the building management system, opening louvers when CO2 sensors read high or during night-purge cooling.

Motorized louvers also do safety duty. Smoke-ventilation louvers on stairwells and atria must open automatically on the fire-alarm signal, and code compliance there is non-negotiable. Specify blade ganging, actuator voltage, the fail-safe position on power loss and weather seals — and confirm the assembly was tested for airflow and rain penetration rather than assumed to perform.

Extruded aluminum alloy 6063-T5 or T6 is the standard for louvers: light, corrosion-resistant and dimensionally stable. The coating matters more than most buyers realise. Powder coating is the economical default, but on facades exposed to years of UV and dust a fluoropolymer (PVDF) finish to AAMA 2605 keeps colour and gloss far longer. On Gulf-coast projects, marine-grade coatings and stainless-steel fixings prevent the white corrosion that ruins cheap installations.

Then there is dust. Riyadh's dry air settles fine dust on every horizontal surface, and a louver blade is a horizontal surface by design. A steeper blade angle sheds dust better than a shallow one, and the powder colour will either hide or advertise the film between washes. Confirm cleaning access before the design is locked.

Louvers are structural elements, not decorations. Brackets and frames must be engineered for the wind loads of SBC 301, which can be substantial on exposed Riyadh sites — a large louver bank on a tall facade accumulates real force. Require wind-load calculations signed by an engineer, plus tested airflow, pressure-drop and rain-penetration data to AMCA or equivalent standards.

Where louvers screen generators, pumps or chillers, acoustic blades absorb and deflect noise — trading airflow for silence, so free area drops and blade depth grows. Where louvers face the street, add anti-throw blades or bird mesh behind the bank. Every added function changes the geometry.

As a planning figure for 2026, fixed aluminum louvers supplied and installed in Riyadh typically run from about SAR 350 to SAR 750 per square metre of facade area, depending on blade depth, coating system and bracket design. Operable and motorized units cost more — roughly SAR 900 to SAR 1,600 per square metre — because every blade run carries actuators, linkages and controls. Treat these as budget brackets, not quotations: they move with profile weight and finish. Two suppliers can quote the same-looking louver at very different prices because one assumes 1.2 mm wall thickness and a basic powder coat while the other assumes heavier extrusions and PVDF. Compare the specification sheet, not the bottom line.
