Entrance Canopy Design: Protecting Saudi Building Entrances

An entrance canopy is the first thing a visitor touches on a Saudi building — the shade between the car door and the lobby door. In Riyadh, that walk can be 20 meters of full sun at 48°C in July, which is why a well-designed canopy is the most-used element of the facade, not a decorative extra.
This guide covers what to specify for a canopy installation in Saudi Arabia — the structure, the roof material, drainage, code requirements and realistic costs — based on what we fabricate and install from our factory in Riyadh.
Types of entrance canopies
Three configurations cover most Saudi projects. A cantilevered canopy is fixed to the facade with no front columns, used where the entrance is flush with the building. A post-supported canopy carries wider projections or long walkways on columns at the outer edge. A car shade canopy spans parking lanes, typically 5-6 meters between columns. Walkway canopies connect the parking area to the entrance as a continuous covered corridor 2.5-3 meters wide.
For a typical villa or office entrance in Riyadh, a cantilever projection of 2.5-3.5 meters is common. Beyond that, the canopy needs columns or a tie-back structure, because the bending moment at the wall grows with the square of the projection.
Materials and specifications that survive the sun
The roof skin decides how long the canopy lasts. Polycarbonate is the most common choice for a canopy installation in Saudi Arabia: specify multi-wall sheets of 8-10 mm with a co-extruded UV-protected top layer, or the sheet yellows after two summers. Aluminum composite panels give a solid, opaque roof that matches the building facade, while laminated or toughened glass suits prestige entrances where transparency matters.
The frame should be aluminum 6063-T5 or T6, powder coated with a polyester or PVDF finish — PVDF for high-exposure elevations. Polycarbonate expands about 0.065 mm per meter per degree Celsius, so sheets must be fixed in slotted holes with rubber washers, and frames need expansion joints on runs longer than about 6 meters. Skip these details and panels buckle or push out of their channels by the second summer.
Designing for the Riyadh climate and the Saudi Building Code
Three loads govern a canopy in Saudi Arabia: wind uplift, self-weight, and rainwater — more than most people expect. Riyadh's storms are rare but intense, so gutters and downspouts must be sized for a short-duration downpour, and the roof should slope 2-3 percent so water drains instead of ponding. Ponding water accelerates UV damage and leaves dust stains on the sheets.
Wind uplift is the critical structural check. A canopy is effectively a single-slope roof, and the Saudi Building Code (SBC 301) requires it to resist the uplift pressure for the site's wind zone. Ask for the engineer's uplift calculation and anchors designed for it: the most common field failure is a canopy torn from its wall or column anchors in a storm, not a collapsed frame.
If the canopy projects over municipal land — a sidewalk or street — check with the local municipality first. Projecting structures over public areas need permits, and clearance rules (usually 2.4-3 meters above the walkway) vary by city.
Sizing rules: projection, clearance and drainage
Work through these numbers before ordering: projection (2.5-3.5 m cantilevered, 4-6 m with posts), clearance under the canopy (minimum 2.4 m for pedestrians, 2.7-3 m where vehicles pass), and slope (2-3 percent toward the gutter). For walkway canopies, place columns so they do not block the path or clash with parking bays.
For car shade canopies, 5-6 meter spans between columns are economical in aluminum; longer spans jump in profile weight and cost. Align columns with parking bay widths so no column lands inside a bay.
What a canopy installation costs in Riyadh
As a guide for Riyadh in 2026, turnkey installed prices per square meter of covered area are roughly: 250-450 SAR for an aluminum frame with 8-10 mm multi-wall polycarbonate; 400-650 SAR with aluminum composite panel roofing; and 700-1,100 SAR for a glass canopy with a heavier structure. These ranges include fabrication, delivery within Riyadh and installation.
The per-meter figure changes with projection, height and wind exposure: a deep cantilever needs heavier wall brackets, a tall canopy needs larger columns, and an exposed site needs stronger fixings. Compare quotes on the full specification — sheet thickness, UV protection, coating type, profile wall thickness and anchors — not on the headline price.
What to ask before you order
Ask for the structural calculation for wind uplift at your location; the aluminum alloy and wall thickness; the coating type and its warranty; the polycarbonate thickness and UV protection (or the panel and glass specification); and a written warranty covering materials and workmanship — typically 5-10 years for the frame coating and 10 years for polycarbonate UV protection.
Make drainage part of the design: hidden gutters and downspouts detailed in the shop drawings, not an afterthought. Confirm the installers seal the wall connection against dust, where the canopy meets the facade — that joint is the usual source of streaks and leaks.
